Biographical / Historical

Inga Broadland Knutzen was born in Lyngdal, Norway on 17 May 1902 to Henry and Ellen Broadland. She had a younger sister, Martha, and two older brothers, Hans and Elias. Her father was a carpenter and spent the first seven years of Inga’s life working in America. She lived in Norway with her mother and siblings until 1909, when they joined her father in America. They spent their first winter in Matsqui, BC, Canada with an aunt before moving to Burlington, Washington in the spring of 1910. Inga attended Burlington High School and graduated in 1921. She went to Bellingham\ Normal School 1921-1922, and then taught school for two years in Lake Campbell, Washington. She married Chris Knutzen\ of Bellingham in 1923, and together they had three children and twelve grandchildren. Her husband died in 1957. Inga died on 8 May 1993.
