Scope and Contents

This collection consists of two versions, English and Norwegian, of remarks given by the Honorable Thor C. Tollefson of the House of Representatives on 5 May 1953.

Biographical / Historical

Thor C. Tollefson was born in Perley, Minnesota, but moved to Tacoma, Washington, at the age of ten. He served in the House of Representatives and gave a speech to the House in 1953 about the contributions of Norwegian-Americans to the United States. He mentions how the Norwegian constitution was modeled after the Constitution of the United States in 1814. He also discusses Norwegian immigration and migration, occupations of Norwegians (farmers, railroad builders, miners, lumbermen, fishermen, laborers, businessmen, etc.), population growth, and contributions to America (professional, sports, government, literature, editorial, education, science, war, etc.) as well as names ofthose who contributed greatly.
