Biographical / Historical
Edith Södergran was born 1892 in St. Petersburg, Russia, and her family belonged to a Swedish speaking Finish minority. In 1909 she was diagnosed with tuberculosis, the same disease that killed her father two years earlier. During her illness, she wrote several collections of poems even though she struggled with money. Her struggle with money is seen in the play. Edith died in 1923, only 31 years old. She remains one of the greatest Scandinavian poets.
